Designed by Paul Sellers in 2013, this stool was originally meant to serve students at the workbench in his woodworking classes. However, the range of possible uses extends far beyond the workshop; I have personally found it surprisingly comfortable for playing the guitar or violin.

This particular stool is unique in two distinct ways. For one, it is made from a leftover piece of 2″ solid oak kitchen countertop engineered using structural finger joints. These unions neatly show throughout the stool to remind us of what can be made from seemingly unwanted material. The mixed shades from the different sections of oak also contribute to the stool’s singular appearance.

The other element that sets this stool apart is the grain orientation for the seat top. In the original design, the grain (wood fibres) runs from side to side, whereas in this case, it runs from front to back. This configuration exposes the end grain – which is quite remarkable in oak – along the front edge where most visible. It also gives the stool a stronger sense of symmetry, whilst the lamination of the oak sections simultaneously ensures a clear variety in colour shades.

This stool is a great addition to a workshop with its modest footprint and hand made feel. It would also make a great extra seating solution in a living room when having guests over.
