The stool and the offcut of the offcut from which it came

This kidney shaped milking stool is part of Paul Sellers’ foundational woodworking course and was made following the first edition of his book, Working Wood 1&2.

The wood was upcycled from a solid oak offcut of kitchen countertop. Not only does this ensure strength and longevity, but it also gives the stool a very unique look resulting from the exposed structural finger joints -a mark of the original countertop engineering process.

With regards to design, the legs taper towards the top, where they go through the 1 ½” thick seat and are glued and wedged from the top to guarantee they will never come loose. The carved top follows the traditional choice for milking stools as it makes it much more comfortable to sit on than a flat seat, especially when the stool is so low down.

This stool would make a fantastic gift for a child, although it is just as suitable for adult use, and ideal for anyone who wants a low seat to be around young children.
